School Issues, Bullying and Self Esteem
On 22 November 2016 Katharine Cook (principal Child and Family Psychologist at the Family Psychology Practice) came to the school to present an information session about bullying.
During her excellent talk, Katharine covered a number of issues, including:
- Understanding where bullying behaviour comes from, its roots in anxiety and how bullying is about ‘de-powering’
- How to focus on protecting our children from vulnerability by building their resilience – the importance of learning to deal with disappointment and practicing sorting out problems on their own
- Surviving friendship dramas – encouraging kids to understand their own preferences and opinions, keeping them involved in activities and diverse social groups, and helping them make deliberate choices about their responses
- How to support young people experiencing bullying – empathising, listening to teachers, finding help
- The importance of parent-child relationship and connection as a pre-requisite to being able to set boundaries (eg for online activities)
